Kaizer Chiefs talisman Keagan Dolly has been in inspiring form for Amakhosi in recent times, putting the needs of the team ahead of his own personal ambition.
After taking up the club captaincy on a temporary basis in place of the injured Itumeleng Khune, the level of expectation increased on Chiefs’ number 10. Despite having been the club’s top goal scorer in the last campaign, Dolly has enjoyed an altered role for coach Arthur Zwane’s side this season, something which has seen the goals dry up, but has seen a better overall output from the former Montpellier attacker.
“I always feel inside me that I can do better, but in the last game I got an assist, so I’m just going to keep on working hard to improve as a player,” Dolly told the club’s official website. “I’m an attacker. I always want to score but, for me, the team comes first. If we win 1-0 and a defender scores from a set piece, we take it. For me, it’s about working hard for the team. Once the team does well then the individuals stand out, and that will align with my personal ambitions.”
The 29-year-old has assumed a leadership role in the Chiefs team owing to his wealth of experience gained both locally and abroad, taking the club’s academy graduates under his wing.
“I am happy to see the likes of Mduduzi Shabalala and Samkelo Zwane coming in and getting a chance. It shows that we are going forward as a Club and there’s a lot of talent here,” said Dolly. “For me personally, I always do my best and try to motivate and encourage the boys through my work and not just by talking to them off the field. I try to lead by example on the field.”
Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to continue their good form when they take on Sekhukhune United on Saturday 7 January at the FNB Stadium. Dolly will be hoping to lead from the front and inspire his team-mates to victory.
