Davids leads Maritzburg to first win and survival chances

Maritzburg United moved off the foot of the DStv Premiership table after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Team of Choice handed a debut to defender Rafiq de Goede who signed for the club this week, while Friday Samu was given a start upfront for the visitors. Gallants, meanwhile, recalled Joseph Malongoane and Sibusiso Sibeko following the midweek loss to Sekhukhune United, with Lesedi Nku and Ranga Chivaviro dropping to the bench.

The first half, however, would not provide any goals although Maritzburg goalkeeper Renaldo Learner was forced into a fine save from Khiba’s effort from distance. Fadlu Davids looked to his bench for reinforcements just before the hour mark, with Samu making for Amadou Soukouna, while Cheick Soumaro and Chivaviro were introduced for Gallants.

With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Maritzburg were gifted the opening goal with 11 minutes to play as Tshepo Gumede put the ball through his own net.

Maritzburg were able to see out the remaining stages to secure their first win in Davids’ second stint in charge, while Gallants drop to the foot of the table.
