The Secret Behind Williams’ Success, According to Rulani

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed the secret behind goalkeeper Ronwen Williams’ impressive form since joining the club from rivals SuperSport United.

Williams has been a key figure in the Brazilians’ domestic success, having recorded ten clean sheets in 14 games prior to their clash with Richards Bay on Friday.

Speaking in a press conference, Mokwena credited the 30-year-old’s form to the competition he faces from the club’s other quality goalkeepers.

“He’s been extremely consistent, but they say a good boxer needs a very good sparring partner and he just happens to have exceptional goalkeepers around him,” said Mokwena.

“Denis Onyango is exceptional, Kennedy (Mweene) is exceptional, Reyaad Piertese is exceptional and Jody February is exceptional too.”

Mokwena also praised the work of goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson, who he described as a “good human being” and “extremely talented football coach all round”.

The tactician further explained that Williams’ tactical awareness has improved since joining Sundowns, which was evident in the team’s 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates.

“Tactically, he’s at a very good level for how we want to play and the bravery to be able to take risks in certain situations,” said Mokwena.

“You saw it against Pirates especially with the teams that press very high, aggressive from the top and so good, he just needs to keep his feet on the ground and keep working.”

Mokwena concluded that Williams and the other goalkeepers at the club must continue to push each other in order to take the team forward.
