The match, which took place at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, saw Chippa United’s Justice Chabalala put the ball into his own net just before the half hour mark to give the Citizens the lead.
However, Etiosa Ighodaro equalised for the Chilli Boys on the stroke of half-time with a header from Azola Ntsabo’s cross. The second stanza saw both sides create chances but neither team could find the winning goal. Chippa United came close to grabbing maximum points in the dying minutes when Sergio Kammies drew a reflex save from shot-stopper Darren Keet from a close-range shot. However, the match ended all square.
Cape Town City’s new signing Lorenzo Gordinho made his debut in the line-up alongside recalls for Marc Van Heerden and Mpho Makola. Chippa, meanwhile, handed Khanyisile Mayo, the younger brother of City’s Khanyisa, his first start. Eric Tinkler’s charges eventually settled to their passing rhythm and went ahead just before the half-hour mark, before Ighodaro equalised for the Chilli Boys on the stroke of half-time.
In the closing stages, City gained momentum with the introduction of Mduduzi Mdantsane and Kajally Drammeh. Darwin Gonzalez came close to restoring the lead for the Citizens nine minutes before time, but his shot was cleared off the line by Chabalala.
The result means that Chippa United have now gone six matches without a win in the DStv Premiership.
