On Tuesday, Rob Moore, agent of Njabulo Blom, revealed the salary package of his client at Major League Soccer club St. Louis City SC. Blom had recently been sold by Kaizer Chiefs to the American club in December, after months of speculation around his future due to his contract expiring at the end of the season.
Moore, who had facilitated the move, noted that despite the salary caps in the MLS, he had negotiated a good package for Blom. He was critical of Chiefs’ salary offer to extend Blom’s contract, saying that ‘Stoppa’ would be getting paid more than what he would have earned in the PSL.
“Listen I think I got him a fair deal, certainly much more than he would have made in South Africa,” Moore said on Metro FM Sports. “So you know that’s one thing, it shows certain jumps year after year and has certain incentives in it. But I think that’s part of the story, the other part of the story is the opportunity he’s going to get,” he added.
Moore further elaborated that for Blom it was not all about the money but the opportunity to grow as a player and as a human being. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with South African football, saying that to get a player what he deserves, you have to fight for it.
“And that was the thing Njabulo was very clear to us right at the beginning, he said, ‘Listen, I don’t really care about the money, I want the opportunity to spread my wings, develop as a player and develop as a human being. I want to go and experience other cultures,'” Moore said.
“I don’t believe at 22 years old (he turned 23 in December), if he stays in South Africa, he’s going to make his career in South Africa. He’s a player who has played 80 matches at 22 years old and he’s knocking on the door of the national team. Of course a player gets paid in a South African context what he’s worth and that you have to fight for,” he concluded.
