Kaizer Jnr: Chiefs Have Changed Their Style of Play

Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr has admitted that the season has not gone according to plan so far.

Despite this, tangible changes have been implemented at Amakhosi under the guidance of new coach Arthur Zwane. Motaung Jr has made significant changes since taking over as Sporting Director, including the appointment of a new coach, new players, new sports scientists and an upcoming new sponsor.

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Motaung Jr said: “I think you know, look according to the results, if you look at the log position it’s not according to the plan we had, but I think everyone is very cognisant of fact the project began with a very deliberate approach. I think having a new coach, a new technical staff, a different high performance team which was addressing a big factor we had before, where our high performance and our fitness and level of intensity wasn’t where we wanted it to be, and those are key factors that comes linking into your game model.”

The change of playing style under Zwane has seen Amakhosi return to the ‘Chiefs way’ of football, as opposed to the more direct style used last season. However, Chiefs’ defensive frailties remain an area of concern.

This was highlighted in their 4-0 defeat to AmaZulu, which was their joint worst result of the season. Motaung Jr said: “Defensively, we know we have really conceded a lot of goals it’s not something that we are used to, and offensively we have created a massive amount of chances but if we had just taken chances that we created, there’d be a different story.”

Despite the setbacks, Chiefs are still in the running for the league title, with their top goalscorer amongst the top three in the league. With the changes implemented by Motaung Jr, the hope is that Amakhosi can return to their glory days of old.
