DStv Premiership: Stellies crushed by Pirates, who leapfrog Chiefs

On Sunday afternoon, Orlando Pirates thrashed Stellenbosch FC 4-1 at Orlando Stadium, propelling them to fourth spot on the DStv Premiership table. After making one change to the side that was thrashed by Golden Arrows, Thabang Monare gave the Buccaneers an early lead with his first goal for the club.

Jose Riveiro’s charges continued to dominate and Innocent Maela doubled their lead midway through the first stanza. Bandile Shandu nearly added a third goal shortly after the half-hour mark, but his shot hit the bottom post and fell back kindly to Sage Stephens in goal. Pirates continued to dictate terms early in the second stanza and Kermit Erasmus went on to grab the third goal on the hour-mark.

Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo added the fourth goal moments later with a low shot from range. Stellies managed to register their presence with 16 minutes to go, as Mervin Boji scored a consolation goal with a free header from a corner. The Sea Robbers were able to see out the rest of the clash, as they won back-to-back league matches for the first time this season.

Thabang Monare opened the scoring in the early stages of the match, before Innocent Maela doubled the lead midway through the first half. Kermit Erasmus grabbed the third goal on the hour-mark, before Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo added a fourth. Stellenbosch managed to grab a consolation goal courtesy of Mervin Boji, but it was not enough to prevent the Buccaneers from claiming a much-needed victory.

The win sees Orlando Pirates jump to fourth spot on the DStv Premiership table, and marks the first time this season that they have won back-to-back league matches.
