Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral has highlighted the Glamour Boys’ struggles this season and identified the issues that have been contributing to the team’s lack of success. Ertugral, who served two separate stints at Naturena, is now a technical advisor for the Turkish Football Association.
The 63-year-old recently shared his analysis on his LinkedIn page following Chiefs’ 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend. He identified the midfield pairing, lack of a natural left centre-back, and the team’s average age as some of the issues that have been hampering the team’s performance.
Ertugral highlighted the midfield pairing of Samkelo Zwane and Yusuf Maart, pointing out that their approach in defensive transitions was not functioning. He suggested that the change in the second half, which saw Siyethemba Sithebe come on, was justified.
The former coach also noted that Chiefs’ current left centre-back, Edmilson Dove, is a converted winger and does not have the expected reflexes from a central defender’s point of view. He added that this often leads to gaps in the defensive line.
Ertugral went on to suggest that Chiefs lack stability and consistency, and that the team needs to maximize its specialist workforce to ensure quality development and provide a high level of performance.
The Turkish coach then questioned whether Chiefs can really be considered a young team, noting that their average age of 26.3 years puts them in sixth position in the PSL this season.
