Mokwena’s Strategy to Handle Busy Calendar for Sundowns

On Tuesday, Mamelodi Sundowns registered their 13th consecutive victory in the DStv Premiership with a 2-0 win over TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium. Coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed the team’s preparation for the hectic schedule ahead, with the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League on the horizon.

Mokwena used the opportunity to give some players an opportunity to feature, including Denis Onyango, Thapelo Morena, Sifiso Ngobeni, Andile Jali, Sipho Mbule and Siphelele Mkhulise who all started, while Surprise Ralani, Brian Onyango, Bongani Zungu, Mosa Lebusa and Erwin Saavedra were able to come on from the bench.

“We know about the schedule. We knew about the schedule going into the mini mid-season break. We worked hard to train every player to make sure that every player is ready,” said Mokwena after the game.

He added: “We’ve played seven matches in 24 days. It’s not easy because that means there’s no training, there’s no enough time. But we are working a little bit harder to make sure that we continue to improve the team and the individual players that are within the team.”

Mokwena refrained from singling out individual player performances, instead congratulating the entire team for registering the win.

“I am not one to speak about individual football players. I am not one to say to the group ‘this player, that player’. But there were a lot of very good performances today and a good team performance. Of course, when you have a good team performance you’ve got to have some stand out performers. That’s what we had on the pitch. Congratulations to everybody,” he said.
