How Polokwane Municipality Plans to Benefit from Chiefs’ Presence: Exclusive

On Friday morning, the Polokwane Municipality announced a three-year partnership with South African football giants, Kaizer Chiefs. The agreement, which is open for renewal when it expires, is set to bring much needed revenue to the local economy.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, Mantlako Sebaka, the manager of sport and recreation at the Polokwane Municipality, explained the reasoning behind the agreement. “We have this principle that we are driving called sport tourism. The sport tourism in a sense that major events in the municipality have proven to bring in wanted revenue, be it at the level of hospitality – the hotels, restaurants and other supporting establishments. We are seeing this upsurge and we are supporting the whole notion of recovery of our local economy be delving into sport tourism, hence we have signed an agreement with Kaizer Chiefs,” Sebaka said.

The deal will see Amakhosi playing three home league matches in Polokwane a season, as well as some cup competition matches. Sebaka revealed that the two parties have had a relationship in the past, from 2011 to 2015, and that it has been tested and proven to work.

When asked if the partnership could be extended in future, Sebaka confirmed that the municipality is open to the idea, but could not disclose the amount of money that is being spent in the deal.
