Inside Look: How Chiefs Engineered Victory Over Royal AM

Kaizer Chiefs bounced back to winning ways on Thursday, with a 2-0 victory over Thwihli Thwahla in Polokwane. Goals from Sifiso Hlanti and Ashley Du Preez sealed the three points for the Glamour Boys, with the latter being set up by new signing Christian Saile Basomboli.

Prior to the game, Chiefs had gone three matches without scoring a goal and the attention was on Saile after the club announced that he had received his work permit. Head coach Arthur Zwane revealed that the plan was to tire out the opposition in the first stanza and then introduce the Democratic Republic of Congo forward in the second stanza.

“We did not want to allow them time and space on the ball because where they come from the altitude later on they will suffocate,” Zwane said in a press conference. “We knew that when Christian came on, we didn’t want to start him in the game, reason being, we wanted to look at how the opposition will obviously setup. And also we didn’t want to put him under pressure, we wanted him to read the game from the bench and then capitalize, take advantage from there.”

The plan worked as Saile gave Chiefs new energy going forward, as Hlanti soon broke the deadlock and the 22-year old gave an assist to Du Preez in the dying minutes to put the game to bed. Zwane was pleased with the way the plan worked and congratulated Saile for executing it.

“Whatever information that we gave him before he went in, he did exactly that, it worked for us and congrats to him and the rest of the guys for executing the plan,” he added.

Kaizer Chiefs will next be in action when they visit TS Galaxy on Sunday afternoon.
