On Thursday, South African forward Lyle Foster signed a four-and-half year deal with English Championship side Burnley from Belgian outfit KVC Westerlo. Foster is now being coached by a legend he idolized growing up, Vincent Kompany, and is honoured to be able to learn from him.
“From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed. I’ve been following and watching a lot of Burnley’s games recently, I really enjoy the style of play,” Foster said via Burnley’s media department. “The coach, I think he’s a great coach and for me to be coached by a legend like him is an honour for me. I grew up watching him play, I played one game against him and now him being my coach and getting to learn, absorb that knowledge everyday for me is a dream come true.”
Kompany has completely changed the style of play at the Turf Moor-based outfit since he succeeded Sean Dyche following their relegation last season. Burnley are now a possession-based team, mirroring the Belgian’s former team Manchester City’s game model.
Foster also spoke about his attributes and what he brings to Kompany’s side, believing he can make a meaningful contribution in the club’s bid to return to the Premier League. “First and foremost, I’m a striker. I like scoring goals of course and giving assists, but I want to help the team as much as possible,” Foster said. “In terms of my strengths, I’m very strong, I keep the ball, I’m good with one on ones. I’m fast and I know I can help the team.”
Burnley are currently top of the Championship table by five points prior to the weekend fixtures and will be promoted to the Premier League automatically if they finish in the top two. Foster will be looking to help Kompany’s side achieve their goal of returning to the Premier League and make his mark in English football.
