Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has provided an update on the injury of influential midfielder Themba Zwane ahead of their CAF Champions League group stage opener against Al-Hilal. Zwane was ruled out of Sundowns’ Nedbank Cup last 32 clash against Richards Bay with an undisclosed injury.
At a press conference, Mokwena revealed that the diagnosis of the scans is still pending and that Zwane is one of seven players currently injured, including Abubaker Nasir, Haashim Domingo, Lebo Maboe, Terrence Dzvukamanja, Abdelmounaim Boutouil and himself. However, the 36-year old tactician clarified that the injury is not as serious as initially thought.

“Not as serious as he looked but hopefully, important player for us, the captain of the team you’ve seen even with Denis (Onyango) on the pitch he still keeps the armband, so important for the team because he gives so much confidence,” said Mokwena. “And Themba is Themba, very good player, so hopefully he’s back sooner rather than later,” he added.
Mamelodi Sundowns are set to take on Sudanese side Al-Hilal in their CAF Champions League group stage opener on Saturday 16 September.
