Experienced Orlando Pirates midfielder Ben Motshwari is facing an uncertain future at the Soweto giants as the season nears its end. Last week, We revealed that an initial proposal in the talks for Motshwari’s contract had been rejected by the club.
Motshwari is in the last four months of his contract with the Buccaneers, having joined the club in 2018 from Bidvest Wits. Sources have indicated that talks are likely to continue in the coming weeks between the parties, but there are no guarantees that the 31-year-old will be offered another long-term deal.
Having arrived on a three-year deal, the Randfontein-born star had the two-year option on his original contract exercised by the club. However, after some changes made by the club since the end of last season and during the January transfer window, indications are that player movements are likely to continue at Bucs at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
“No decision has been made as yet, and like all the other players whose contracts are nearing an end, he (Motshwari) will know about his future once the club has decided. That will most likely happen at the end of the season,” said a source. “But there are no guarantees. Everyone can see that the club has been making changes and there are currently a lot of midfielders in the squad after the arrival of the likes of Makhehleni Makhaula and others,” the source added.
Motshwari has started in only three games and has made 11 appearances in total from Pirates’ 19 games to date. He featured in three of the team’s four fixtures in the MTN8, including the final against AmaZulu, as Pirates went on to win the trophy earlier in the campaign.
