In Numbers: How Petersen Secured the Chiefs Number One Jersey

Brandon Petersen appears to have made the number one spot his own at Kaizer Chiefs this season, based on the impressive numbers he has put up.

Speaking to the media, the 27-year-old goalkeeper revealed that he was patient in waiting for his opportunity, but has now taken it with both hands.

Petersen has conceded just four goals in the matches that he has played, outperforming both Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma this season.

“I waited for my opportunity, and it came now and obviously I took it with both hands, and you never know when someone else’s chance will come so, while I have a chance to play, is to do the best I can do and help the team where I can,” he said.

The Amakhosi shot-stopper also spoke of the need to create chemistry with the back four, which has been rotated regularly due to injuries and a lack of form.

“Obviously, you want to find a balance and create that chemistry, but the way we train, we play with different players and a different back four. So for me, it is to get to know all my players and when I get an opportunity to play with them, it is to know all their strengths and weaknesses and then see where I can help them bring the best out of them. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter who I play with, at training is where I create my chemistry, so whoever gets to play, I adapt to,” he added.

With his impressive performances, Petersen appears to have cemented his place as Chiefs’ number one, and will hope to continue his good form as the Glamour Boys look to challenge for honours this season.
