Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has admitted that the team has let their fans and chairman down by not winning any trophies in the past eight years. The Glamour Boys had looked set to challenge for silverware this season after an overhaul of the squad in the off-season, but have been knocked out of the MTN8 in the semi-finals and lost their eighth league game of the season against Golden Arrows on Sunday.
Speaking ahead of the Soweto Derby, Khune said that the players are aware of the expectations placed on them by the fans and the chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung, and that they have to take responsibility for the lack of success in recent years.
The veteran goalkeeper also admitted that it feels strange to not be winning trophies with the club, after having been used to it for so long.
“Since I’ve been promoted in 2004, I’ve been winning trophies and for the fact that for the past seven years I have not been winning, I feel like I don’t belong to the badge, I don’t belong to the club,” he said. “Every player that signs for Chiefs he knows his responsibility.”
Khune and his Kaizer Chiefs teammates will be hoping to get back on the trophy trail when they take on Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on Saturday.
