Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza has given his two cents on the upcoming Soweto Derby, which will take place this weekend at the FNB Stadium. Chiefs will be taking on their rivals Orlando Pirates in what is sure to be a thrilling encounter.
Speaking to PSLSA on the sidelines of the Soweto Derby press conference held in Midrand Johannesburg, Mkhonza said that Chiefs’ recent run of poor results will not be a factor in the derby.
“This phase will pass. People should not be fooled by the recent results. Things always change in the derby and you know that we have dominated the past four derbies and we want to make it five in a row. And in all those derbies which we won, Chiefs were coming in as underdogs. It will be the same on Saturday and the results will also be the same. I can predict that Chiefs will win this one 2-0,” he said.
Mkhonza added that the past results should not be taken into consideration ahead of a game of this magnitude.
“The past results don’t really matter in a derby. Every team goes looking for a win, but I know Chiefs are ready for this one. You know, form doesn’t really matter. What you need to show is personality and character on the day. The players should take responsibility and know how to handle the pressure. That’s what matters and that’s what wins you the Soweto Derby,” Mkhonza concluded.
The much-anticipated Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will take place this Saturday, 16 October, at the FNB Stadium.
