Meanwhile, Spurs had been in fantastic form in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, and were looking to extend their winning streak.
The match started off slowly, with both sides struggling to find their rhythm.
However, in the 18th minute, Sekhukhune United broke the deadlock through a well-taken free kick from midfielder Siyabonga Mokotjo.
The goal seemed to spark the home side into life, and they continued to dominate the game for the rest of the first half.
Spurs, however, started the second half with renewed energy, and in the 56th minute, they equalized through a powerful header from substitute Thabo Ryan.
The rest of the second half was an even affair, with both sides having chances to take the lead. In the end, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, with both sides progressing to the quarter-finals.
Overall, it was an entertaining match between two evenly matched sides.
Sekhukhune have now progressed to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup, where they will face a tough test against either Kaizer Chiefs or Maritzburg United.
