Broos Criticizes Mailula’s Agent Following MLS Move

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed his disappointment in the agent of Cassius Mailula, after the 22-year-old striker’s move to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.

Mailula, who joined the Canadian outfit from Mamelodi Sundowns in July, has only made two appearances in the MLS, both of them as a substitute.

Speaking to the press after announcing his squad, Broos suggested that Mailula’s agent had not been looking out for the player’s best interests.

“You have a good agent when the agent is looking at you, but if you have an agent and the agent is only looking at his wallet than you don’t have a good agent,” he said.

The coach went on to explain why he felt the move was ill-advised, noting that Toronto FC have several international players in their ranks.

“When you let him go to Toronto FC where you know that there are two Italian internationals, [Lorenzo] Insigne is there, that there is a Canadian international [Deandre] Kerr. You let go of a young player like this who has 15 games of experience in the PSL, that is not the right choice,” he said.

Broos believes that Mailula’s season is effectively a lost one, as he is unlikely to receive much playing time at the club.

He suggested that the striker should have stayed at Sundowns and played in the CAF Champions League in order to gain experience and have a better chance of securing a move in the future.

“It should’ve been better that he should stay in Sundowns and play [CAF] Champions League again, so he got the experience and maybe got the move in one or two years, but now it was much too soon and not the right club,” he said.
