Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane, who signed a one-year
contract extension at the start of the season, is yet to play an official
game for the club this season. With the 37-year-old facing stiff
competition from the other three goalkeepers at Bucs, the club is now
looking to loan him out until the end of his current contract in June
2024.
Siya sources have indicated that Pirates want to loan Mpontshane out in
January, as his age means he needs more game time but would not get it at
the club. The sources added that Pirates prefer Sipho Chaine as their
first choice followed by Richard Ofori, then Melusi Buthelezi, with Zoey
Monyepao from Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge team as the fourth choice.
Apart from TS Galaxy who were interested in him, and Maritzburg United who
were also interested, no other team has shown interest in Mpontshane yet.
The Siya crew contacted Pirates for comment but received no response while
preparing this story.
