Chiefs’ Trophy Drought Persists as They Exit Carling Cup

Kaizer Chiefs’ wait for silverware continues after they were knocked out
of the Carling Knockout following a 1-0 loss to AmaZulu on Saturday night.
The match, which was played at the FNB Stadium, saw AmaZulu’s Taariq
Fielies score the only goal of the game two minutes before full-time.

Both teams had early chances in the first half, with Usuthu’s Tshepang
Moremi denied by a point-blank save from Itumeleng Khune in the ninth
minute, and Chiefs’ Tebogo Potsane heading over the bar shortly after.
Chiefs had the momentum towards the end of the first half, with Ranga
Chivaviro heading wide from a Reeve Frosler cross. However, neither team
could break the deadlock in the first half.

Molefi Ntseki made a double change for Chiefs after the hour mark,
bringing on Edson Castillo and Jasond Gonzalez to replace Yusuf Maart and
Chivaviro. Both Castillo and Gonzalez had chances in the box, but were
unable to connect with the ball in crucial moments. AmaZulu, however, made
the most of their opportunity when Fielies scored two minutes before
full-time, combining with Celimpilo Ngema to seal the win for Usuthu.

The result means that Chiefs’ wait for silverware will continue, while
AmaZulu progress to the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout.
