Mamelodi Sundowns have qualified for the African Football League
semi-finals after a goalless draw against Petro de Luanda on Sunday, 24
October. The Brazilians advanced to the last four with a 2-0 aggregate
win.
The match at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria was marred by an
early red card for Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala, who was given
his marching orders for bringing down Tiago Azulão in the third minute.
Despite being a man down, the home side pushed forward and went close to
finding the opener through Gaston Sirino, whose strike was saved at the
near post.
The Angolans had their chances in the first half but were unable to find
the back of the net. Themba Zwane had an opportunity to put the game
beyond Petro’s reach but his one-on-one with Hugo Marques ended in a save.
Sundowns held on for a clean sheet in the second half and will now face
African champions Al Ahly this weekend.
