On Friday, 27 Oct 2023, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena
revealed that the club had unsuccessfully attempted to sign two strikers
in the previous transfer window. The news comes as midfielder Gaston
Sirino returned to the club after a fall out with the coach and
management.
Sirino had not been considered for selection in the early stages of the
season, but has already made an impact since his return, with one goal and
an assist in two substitute appearances and one start.
Mokwena revealed that the club had a list of three potential signings, two
of which were local and one foreign-based. The publication previously
reported that the club were interested in signing Orlando Pirates attacker
Vincent Pule, who has worked with Mokwena at the Soweto giants, but the
Buccaneers were reluctant to sell. The Brazilians were also heavily linked
with Cape Town City forward Khanyisa Mayo and Al Ahly attacker Percy Tau
in the previous transfer window.
The return of Sirino could influence the club’s transfer plans, as the
Uruguayan looks to have settled his differences with Mokwena and
management. With his return, the Brazilians may no longer be desperate for
a striker, as the 32-year-old looks to be making an impact on the pitch.
