Friday, marked the one year anniversary of Mamelodi Sundowns head coach
Rulani Mokwena as a sole head coach, and his incredible win rate has
sparked comparisons between him and former head coach Pitso Mosimane.
Mokwena is still unbeaten in the Premiership since his first match in
charge in October last year, where they thrashed Maritzburg United 5-0. He
has been in charge of 28 league matches since then and has won 22 of them,
with an outstanding win rate of 78%. This far surpasses the win rate of
the co-coaching arrangement he had with Manqoba Mngqithi, who won 25 out
of 37 league games, with a win rate of 67, 5%.
Mosimane’s win rate in his first year at the club was only 51,7%. He
joined the club mid-season in the 2012/13 campaign and had to awaken the
sleeping giant, as he dealt with a club in a crisis. Sundowns finished
ninth on the log after he joined them.
Former Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana and former midfielder Tiyani
Mabunda feel it’s unfair to compare Mosimane with Mokwena. Kekana said on
The Pitchside Podcast posted on the club’s YouTube channel, “When you want
to celebrate your people, don’t put comparisons, then you will miss the
fundamentals of celebrating your people properly and correctly. Everyone
has got his own ability, talents and how he does things, so I think we
just have to appreciate that these are our very own. It’s unfair to
compare them because once you begin to compare them, then you remove the
greatness of each of them, they are all great in their own aspect.”
