Chiefs Foiled in Quest for Second Spot After First Home Defeat

On Tuesday night, Kaizer Chiefs missed the chance to move into second
place on the DStv Premiership table after losing 1-0 to Cape Town City at
the FNB Stadium.

Chiefs handed a first start to Sibongiseni Mthethwa, while Itumeleng
Khune returned in goal, with George Matlou and Brandon Petersen ruled out
with injuries.

Keagan Dolly featured on the bench for the first time this season.
Amakhosi had the better of the opening exchanges and should have gone
ahead on 12 minutes when Pule Mmodi was denied by shot-stopper Darren Keet
in a one-on-one.

Christian Saile then beat his marker for pace on the wing but his cross
had too much power and missed Mmodi and Ashley Du Preez in the box.

City showed more attacking intent towards the end of the first half, with
Khanyisa Mayo almost breaking the deadlock with a glancing header that
missed just wide. At half-time, City boss Eric Tinkler made three
attacking changes, bringing on Darwin Gonzalez, Taahir Goedeman and Jaedin
Rhodes.

And it was Mayo who eventually broke the deadlock just before the
hour-mark with a free header at the back post after a cross by Gonzalez.

Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt responded with a double attacking change,
introducing Dolly for his first appearance of the season and Ranga
Chivaviro in place of Mmodi and Saile.

But the Glamour Boys were unable to break down a City defence that
defended deep, and in the dying minutes, Dolly came close with a strike
that was smothered by Keet.

The defeat was Chiefs’ fourth of the season in the league, dropping them
down to seventh on the log, while City moved up to fifth.
