Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed one of his star
players, Peter Shalulile, played the MTN8 final with an injury. Despite
this, Mokwena praised the team’s performance in the match, which ended in
a 3-1 penalty shoot-out victory for Orlando Pirates.
Speaking to SuperSport TV after the match, Mokwena said: “We should have
won it, so many chances, zero chances for Pirates over 120 minutes, so
let’s congratulate the winners Orlando Pirates, congratulations and
congratulations to my players, they gave it their all.”
He continued: “We were in a very difficult moment, Peter (Shalulile)
played with an injury but it’s not an excuse, we keep going, we’re
Mamelodi Sundowns, we’re strong.”
Mokwena also noted the heavy fixture load that his players have been
facing: “We ran out of legs a little bit, it’s difficult for us at the
moment, we play a lot of games so, there’s a price on every ticket but
let’s leave it to congratulate the players and let’s leave it to
congratulate Orlando Pirates.” He concluded: “When we win it’s fantastic
and when we also lose we need to be humble in defeat. So we’re Mamelodi
Sundowns, we’ll bounce back.”
