SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has provided an update on the fitness
of experienced defender Thulani Hlatshwayo, who has been out of action for
over a month. Hlatshwayo, nicknamed ‘Tyson’, has gained a reputation for
his workman-like fighting spirit and tenacity on the field of play.
The 33-year-old’s last game came in December 2022, and indications are
that the injury he sustained is serious. Hunt told the club’s official
website that the absence of Hlatshwayo is a huge blow for the team.
“He had a big concussion and concussions are always dangerous especially
when you are playing in that area of the pitch heading the ball, so we are
going to have to look and see what’s the story,” he said.
The coach also provided an update on the fitness of Luke Fleurs, who is
also currently on the injury list. Hunt said that the team is struggling
to put together a suitable back four, and that the absence of Hlatshwayo
and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe is a major setback.
Hunt will spend the next few days looking for ways to put together a
suitable back four which could see the introduction of Bilal Baloyi at
centre back alongside Thamsanqa Gabuza, who was surprisingly deployed as a
centre back by the coach in their last match.
