Monare Opens Up on ‘Tough Love’ Relationship with Hunt

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabang Monare has praised former coach Gavin
Hunt for the impact he has had on his career. Monare was a key player at
former club Bidvest Wits under Hunt, where he was part of the squad that
won the Premiership in the 2016/17 season, along with the Telkom Knockout
and MTN8 trophies.

Monare has credited Hunt for taking his game to another level by not
praising him, even for a single game in his four seasons at the Clever
Boys. “Tough love is what I got from him and to be honest he showed me
that I can be beyond what I thought I was at the time and he pushed me way
beyond what my limits were at the time,” Monare said on Marawa Sports
Worldwide.

The 33-year old midfielder went on to explain that it took him time to
realize the psychology behind the treatment by Hunt. “At the time I didn’t
understand. I was training every week to try and show him what I’m capable
of doing and by that I ended up becoming a more better player than I was,”
he continued.

Monare believes that Hunt’s approach was to ensure that his players never
stop, never lose the hunger and never feel like they have achieved enough.
“He always wants his players to never stop, never lose the hunger, never
feel like you’re there yet,” he added.
