Mamelodi Sundowns have paused a number of contract negotiations of
players and technical team members whose deals are up for renewal, with
midfielder Haashim Domingo joining the list. According to high ranking
sources at Chloorkop, head coach Rulani Mokwena could play a key role in
the extension of Domingo’s contract. The 27-year old joined Sundowns in
2020 from Bidvest Wits on a five-year contract, with the deal being broken
up into a straight three-year deal and an option to renew for a further
two years. It is believed that Sundowns are likely to trigger the two-year
option on Domingo’s contract as he is one of the players who has been
regularly used by Mokwena.
In contrast, striker Gift Motupa’s future at the club could be uncertain
once the season concludes. Motupa also signed a five-year contract when he
joined Sundowns in 2020, however, he has yet to start a game for the
Brazilians in all competitions this season, with only six appearances off
the bench. Sundowns did not make any signings in the January transfer
window, but they will have an opportunity to upgrade the squad in the
off-season once they have settled the outstanding contract negotiations.
As a result, Motupa’s future could lie away from the club, with a loan
move an option, especially if Masandawana reinforce the squad with new
forwards in the off-season.
