Mamelodi Sundowns have now appointed the English coach as a set-piece
coach, but his role at the club could be more than just that.
Mamelodi Sundowns have appointed Michael Loftman as a set-piece coach, but
PSLSA can reveal that there may be more to the story.
The South African club have been known to be making changes to their
technical team, with assistant coach Steve Komphela and senior coach
Manqoba Mngqithi both reaching the final months of their respective
contracts. Meanwhile, head coach Rhulani Mokwena’s contract is set to
expire in 2024.
Loftman is no stranger to Mokwena, having worked closely with him during
their time at Orlando Pirates from 2018 to 2021. At Pirates, Loftman had
two roles, as a match analyst and head coach of the DStv Diski Challenge.
He also previously held two positions at Lusaka Dynamos in the Zambian
Premier League and with the Egyptian national team during their World Cup
qualifiers campaign.
The Englishman’s recent appointment could be an indication that Mokwena
has more influence at the club than before. It is believed that Loftman’s
role at Sundowns could evolve in the coming months, with his position
potentially expanding beyond a set-piece coach.
The new roles in the Brazilians’ technical team will become clearer at the
end of the season, once Mokwena and Loftman’s contracts are concluded.
