On Saturday, Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams revealed his picks for
the FIFA Men’s Best Awards.
With his side chasing CAF Champions League glory and looking to help
Bafana Bafana qualify for the AFCON, Williams gave his input on some of
the world’s best players and coaches over the last season.
The outright favourite for the coveted award was Lionel Messi. The
Argentine captain finally got his hands on the FIFA World Cup and played a
pivotal role in his country’s achievement.
His head coach Hugo Broos and Williams both voted for the 36-year-old to
win his seventh FIFA Men’s Best Award. Messi captained Argentina to World
Cup glory in Qatar, and scored 27 goals in 49 games for club and country
in the 2021/22 season.
His impressive form and leadership qualities were enough to convince
Williams that he deserved the accolade. The Bafana Bafana captain also
gave his backing to Cristiano Ronaldo, who he believes should have been in
contention for the award.
Ronaldo, who scored 29 goals in 44 games for club and country, had an
impressive season, helping his side Juventus to the Coppa Italia title.
Williams’ selections for the FIFA Men’s Best Awards demonstrate his
appreciation for the world’s top players and coaches. His vote for Messi
is a testament to the star’s extraordinary achievements over the last
season.
