Lorch’s Comeback Propels Bucs to Advancement in Carling Knockout

Orlando Pirates advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout on
Friday evening, after beating Cape Town Spurs 2-0 at the Orlando Stadium.
The Buccaneers made three changes to the team that started in the MTN8
final against Mamelodi Sundowns, with Thembinkosi Lorch making his first
appearance of the season.

Spurs had a bright start, with Therlo Moosa’s side-footed shot in the box
missing the bottom corner by a whisker. Pirates had an injury blow on the
half-hour mark, after shot-stopper Sipho Chaine could not continue after
colliding with Moosa and was replaced by Melusi Buthelezi, who made his
debut.

Pirates upped the tempo of their game towards the end of the first stanza
and were unfortunate not to be 1-0 up just before the half-time break,
after Nazeer Allie cleared Deon Hotto’s shot, that got past goalkeeper
Zama Dlamini, off the line.

The Soweto giants took the lead in the 57th minute, with Tapelo Xoki’s
header from a corner finding the back of the net. The visitors responded
well, but were unable to find the equaliser. Pirates sealed the win in the
81st minute, when Evidence Makgopa’s shot from outside the box found the
bottom corner of the net.

The result means that Orlando Pirates are through to the quarter-finals of
the Carling Knockout, where they will face Chippa United on the 3rd of
November.
