Friday, 29 Oct 2023, Kaizer Chiefs’ reported pursuit of South African wide forward Tashreeq Matthews, who is based in Sweden, could gain momentum given the circumstances around his career.
The Siya crew previously reported that Amakhosi could look into bringing Matthews back to South Africa from Swedish club IK Sirius, where he has been in a great form, and has more goal contributions than any South African this season.
South African renowned agent Rob Moore, who used to manage Matthews, revealed that the youngster had a chance to sign for Major League Soccer side Toronto before they scouted Cassius Mailula but he turned them down. Moore said on the ThisIsFootball.Africa YouTube channel that Matthews had the chance to go to Toronto in January 2022 and he could have had six months there, which would have been a great opportunity to learn at a different level.
Amakhosi have a good chance of signing the former Dortmund striker if they are serious, and Moore suggested that it would be difficult for Matthews to get a sizable transfer playing for Sirius. He added that if Matthews had gone to Toronto and done really well, he could have come back to Europe on a completely different level.
At 23, perhaps what Matthews needs is to make a big impact at a bigger club, where he could once again get the attention of the European heavyweights and also Bafana Bafana.
