Chiefs Eager for Return to CAF Champions League Glory

Kaizer Chiefs have not featured in the CAF Champions League since the 2015/16 season, where they were knocked out in the first round by Congolese side AS Vita Club.

Assistant coach Dillon Sheppard has revealed Kaizer Chiefs’ ambitions to return to the CAF Champions League, having gone all the way to the final in 2021.

Speaking to journalists ahead of their Nedbank Cup clash against Casric Stars on Sunday, Sheppard, who was standing in for head coach Arthur Zwane, said, “Once you’ve had a taste of the Champions League and Africa, and going all the way to the final like we did, and have that experience, our talk has always been Champions League has to be.”

He continued, “The top competition and this club deserves to be there, you know, with the stature of the club and its history, it’s our job and that’s the space we need to be talking in. And yes, this cup gives us an opportunity to play in the Confederations Cup but to be honest with you, we want to be in the Champions League spot because like I say, once you’ve had a taste of that and the experience of that, I think it’s the only place you want to be.”

Kaizer Chiefs have not featured in the CAF Champions League since the 2015/16 season, where they were knocked out in the first round by Congolese side AS Vita Club.

The Amakhosi will have the opportunity to return to the Champions League if they finish in second spot in the DStv Premiership as well as win the Nedbank Cup.
