Sundowns and 15 Competitors Advance to CAFCL Group Stages

Mamelodi Sundowns have secured their spot in the group stages of the CAF Champions League, after a dominant 6-0 aggregate victory over Tanzanian side Bumamuru. This will be the South African giants’ fifth consecutive appearance in the group stages of the competition.

The DStv Premiership champions are the only South African team in the group stages this season, after Orlando Pirates were knocked out by Botswana Premier League outfit Jwaneng Galaxy, who are led by South African-born coach Morena Ramoreboli. This is not the first time Galaxy have made it to the group stages under Ramoreboli’s guidance, with the club having achieved the feat in 2021/22.

Defending champions Al Ahly also confirmed their spot in the group stages with an emphatic 7-0 aggregate victory over Ethiopian side Saint George. The competition will be an opportunity for South African forward Percy Tau to defend his title.

The list of teams that have qualified for the group stages are: Al Ahly (Egypt), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Esperance (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns, Pyramids (Egypt), Simba SC (Tanzania), Petro de Luanda (Angola), TP Mazembe (DRC), Al Hilal (Sudan), ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast), Young Africans (Tanzania), Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia), Jwaneng Galaxy (Botswana), FC Nouadhibou (Mauritania), and Medeama (Ghana).

The draw for the group stages will take place on October 6.
