With the return of experienced goalkeeper Richard Ofori to full training at Orlando Pirates, there could be a dilemma surrounding the goalkeeping department at the club. Ofori had been expected to be selected for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar for the Black Stars before being sidelined by injury.
However, with the emergence of Sipho Chaine at Bucs, the former Chippa United goalminder is likely to retain his place as the number one, at least for now, according to sources. Chaine was given his debut in January against Cape Town City and has since played eight consecutive games in all competitions.
“Sipho Chaine is doing well and has got the support of everyone, including the technical team and the players. Judging by his performances, he is likely to continue between the sticks for the team in the coming games because there is no reason to change him,” said the source.
As reported in edition 1313 of Soccer Laduma, the Soweto giants currently have Ofori and Siyabonga Mpontshane nearing the end of their respective contracts, with the experienced keepers’ futures expected to be finalized in due course.
The Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on Sunday saw the Amakhosi win the match, thanks to an Olisa Ndah own goal. The result has been met with mixed reactions from Mzansi, with some fans commending the team for their performance while others were less than impressed.
