On Friday, former Major League Soccer (MLS) player Kamohelo Mokotjo signed for South African DStv Premiership club Sekhukhune United on a one-year deal with an option to extend. The 31-year old’s signing came as a coup for the Limpopo-based side, with sources indicating that Mokotjo will likely earn upwards of R2 million per annum.
Mokotjo parted ways with FC Cincinnati in November 2021 and was linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, but the club reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign him. Kaizer Motaung Jr, the club’s Sporting Director, was vocal about reducing the average age in the squad, saying “I think it’s key for everyone to understand, and something the club is always going to say, that youth is part of our main strategy. We have to reduce the average age of the team.”
The former SuperSport United midfielder told Metro FM Sports that he was open to a move to Amakhosi, but at this stage of his career, it was not all about the money. Mokotjo was understood to be earning R15 million per annum at FC Cincinnati, but ultimately chose to join Sekhukhune United.
The Bafana Bafana international’s signing is a major coup for the Limpopo-based side, as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for the DStv Premiership title. With a high-profile signing like Mokotjo, they have certainly taken a step in the right direction.
