On Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs supporters were once again involved in an incident of fan violence following the club’s exit from the Carling Knockout at the hands of AmaZulu. Fed up with yet another defeat, Amakhosi supporters threw objects onto the field and in the direction of head coach Molefi Ntseki.
This is the second major knockout competition that the club has missed out on this season, with just the Nedbank Cup left later in the campaign to compete for. Their run in the Premiership has not been as convincing either, with their chances of winning the title not quite high at the moment.
Kaizer Chiefs have pleaded with supporters in recent weeks to behave at the stadium, as this is costing the club heavily, with fines from the PSL hitting them hard in the pocket. Now, it appears the next step, after the latest incident, will be for the club to play without supporters, possibly for one game, at one of their home games. This means the club would not have gate takings, one of the revenue streams for the club.
The supporters’ behaviour looks set to hit Amakhosi management even harder, as the club faces the prospect of playing without a crowd in the near future. This would be a major blow for the club, and many fans will hope that it does not come to that.
