The historic Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is set to take place on Saturday 25th February at the FNB Stadium. The Buccaneers come into the fixture with a better form, having won four of their last five league games, their only blemish being a narrow 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns. Pirates are currently lying third on the log, five points behind second-placed SuperSport United and three points clear of fifth-placed Chiefs.
The Glamour Boys, on the other hand, have endured a difficult run of form, suffering four defeats in their last six matches, the last of which was a 3-2 loss against Golden Arrows this past Sunday. However, Amakhosi have won the last four league clashes between the sides and will be looking to make history by winning their fifth consecutive game against Pirates for the first time in the fixture’s history.
Head coach Arthur Zwane could also become the first South African-born coach to complete a league double for Chiefs over Pirates in the PSL era after a stunning Yusuf Maart goal handed Amakhosi a 1-0 win in the reverse.
The two teams have released their starting lineups for the game, with Kaizer Chiefs fielding 1. Petersen, 30. Ngezana, 2. Dove, 4. Kwinika, 23. Hlanti, 6. Sithebe, 8. Maart, 42. Shabalala, 10. Dolly, 9. Du Preez, 21. Salie, while Orlando Pirates will have 34. Chaine, 5. Sibisi, 27. Xoki, 23. Maela, 45. Pule, 29. Mako, 4. Timm, 15. Ndlondlo, 14. Saleng, 3. Lorch, 37. Dzvukamanja.
The eagerly awaited Soweto Derby promises to be an exciting clash between two of South Africa’s biggest teams, and fans will be hoping for a thrilling game that will live up to the hype.
