Unveiling the Vulnerabilities: Why Sundowns Are Not Invincibles

Mamelodi Sundowns have made history after setting a new record of the
longest unbeaten run in the PSL.

The Brazilians have gone 32 league games unbeaten combined over two
seasons, surpassing the previous record held by Kaizer Chiefs since 2005,
following their 3-1 thrashing of Stellenbosch.

The win has sparked debate amongst supporters as to whether the
Brazilians can go the whole season unbeaten and become the first team to
complete an invincible campaign.

Renowned South African agent Rob Moore believes half of the Brazilians’
league games have been closely contested and if they are to assert their
dominance and put fear into the opposition, they need to win by seven and
eight-goal margins, instead of one-goal margins.

“If you look at their eight league games to date, with the exception of
Arrows where they won 4-0, four of those eight games they’ve only won by
one goal margins,” Moore said on ThisIsFootball.Africa Youtube Channel.

“We’re talking about Chippa, Richards Bay, Polokwane (Sundowns won by one
goal margins against Sekhukhune United, Kaizer Chiefs, Richards Bay and
Orlando Pirates) one goal winning margins, at the end of the day it begs
the question, in my opinion, are they a boxer capable of having a knockout
punch, have they got the killer instinct to deliver it? “Or are they a
boxer, that is a technical boxer, who wants to run by the textbook and win
on points all the time? I wanna see a champion with a knockout punch, I
wanna see a champion winning 5-0, 6-0, 7-0, 8-0. If it’s gotta be eight,
it must be eight because the teams on the receiving end of the eight, have
to realize that ‘we ain’t good enough’. It doesn’t do anyone a favour
one-goal winning margins because it lulls the opposition into a false
sense of security,” he said.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ biggest challenge of becoming the first ‘invincibles’
in the Premiership could lie on how early they can win the league title.
The Brazilians are currently eight points clear at the top of the table
after eight games, with Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs 17 points and 13
points behind respectively, although the Buccaneers have three games in
hand.

For the Brazilians to take their game to another level, they need a team
that can challenge them for the league title up to the last few games of
the campaign.

Only time will tell if Mamelodi Sundowns can become the first team to
complete a season unbeaten.
