Mamelodi Sundowns have extended their record of consecutive victories in the PSL to 14 matches after beating Sekhukhune United 2-0 over the weekend. This puts them 21 points ahead of the pack in the league standings, with the title seemingly becoming a foregone conclusion.
Head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed that the team does not compare themselves with PSL teams anymore, but rather with European teams. This is in an effort to compete in the CAF Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
An emphatic win in front of the Yellow Nation!

“On the metrics, we’re in line with…what you don’t know is that we compare ourselves with the best in the world and we’re in line there,” Mokwena said in a press conference. He went on to explain that he had received a report from a European-based analyst, comparing Sundowns to the best teams in Europe.
Mokwena believes that this is the level that they need to be at to be successful in the Champions League and Club World Cup. “That’s what we try to do, because that’s the space we’re trying to compete, the (CAF) Champions League, with (FIFA) Club World Cup, the Super League, that’s the space we have to be in and hence as I say, very proud of the players, incredible effort,” he said.
Sundowns will resume their league schedule when they travel to traditional rivals Orlando Pirates on Saturday afternoon.
