SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has confirmed that veteran striker Thamsanqa Gabuza will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Matthews revealed that the club had three offers to sell Gabuza in January, but decided to keep him until the end of the season.
The 35-year-old has been with the Tshwane outfit since 2019, and has made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice. Last season he scored seven goals for the club. Matthews explained that the club decided to keep Gabuza in order to have the necessary firepower, and as a result signed Senegalese forward Niang during the January transfer window.
“We kept Gabuza when we could have let him go. We had three offers for Gabuza and we kept him, to have the firepower. We brought in Lepasa and brought in Niang a little bit for this season, but more a long-term target man because Gabuza is not going to stay with us at the end of the season,” Matthews said.
Gabuza will remain a key member of the team for head coach Gavin Hunt until the end of the campaign, and SuperSport is now planning for life without the veteran striker going forward. The club will host Cape Town City at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
