Chiefs’ Mdu Speaks: No Room for Kids in the Derby

On Saturday, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will face off in the highly anticipated Soweto Derby.

Despite being the youngest player on the pitch, 19-year-old Mduduzi Shabalala is not overawed by his more experienced counterparts.

Speaking at the Soweto Derby press conference at Vodaworld in Midrand, Shabalala said, “To be quite honest, there are no kids on the field of play. We are all the same. We are all playing for Kaizer Chiefs, so when you go onto that field, you must know that you’re not playing for yourself. You’re playing for an institution and everyone who came in numbers. You just have to play your normal game and do your best to get the result for the team. It’s not about us, but it’s about the team and the people who came in numbers. There’s no such thing as being a kid, you have to win.”

Having featured in seven consecutive matches for Chiefs, three of which have come as a starter, Shabalala looks set to be a part of the team that takes on Orlando Pirates.

The young player will be motivated by the fact that he managed to find the back of the net in Chiefs’ last game, scoring against Golden Arrows, his second goal of the season

Kick off for the match is at 15:30, with Mzansi eagerly awaiting to see if the Glamour Boys can secure a win.
