Orlando Pirates have added a new member to their coaching staff with the appointment of Scott Chickelday as the club’s new strikers coach.
The 48-year-old was most recently at Billericay Town ladies and has previously coached at Tottenham Hotspur and QPR. Chickelday has gained a reputation in England for elevating strikers’ games to the next level. He started his tenure as a striker’s coach in 2019 after identifying a gap in the market.
“I was on holiday and met an American Football coach. He was talking about the coaches they have there for every specific position. I was telling him that in England we have only really got a goalkeeper coach. There was a real niche for it.
Players noticed that I had started doing it and it just went crazy, if I am honest,” he told SkySports in an interview last year. Among Chickelday’s high-profile clients are Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, who has three goals and four assists in 17 games this season, and Liverpool’s teenage sensation Harvey Elliot, who has scored twice in six UEFA Champions League matches.
With Pirates having scored just nine league goals in 14 matches, Chickelday’s appointment makes perfect sense for the Buccaneers.
