Banyana Banyana bounced back in the COSAFA Women’s Championship with their first win after a convincing 3-1 victory against Madagascar on Saturday afternoon at Dobsonville Stadium.
Thubelihle Shamase opened the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot after 13 minutes, but Anajrasoa Velomanantsolo equalised for Madagascar just before the break.
Desiree Ellis’ side made a few changes to the team that lost narrowly against Malawi in their opening group game, bringing in Lonathemba Mhlongo, Unathi Simayile, Ayesha Moosa and Tshegofatso Motlogelwa.
Samkelisiwe Selana made an instant impact when she came off the bench, scoring two goals in the second half to put Banyana in the driving seat. The first goal was a looping strike over the goalkeeper, while the second was a close-range finish after a cross by Nicole Michael.
Jade Jones had a chance to give Banyana a two-goal cushion, but her free header missed a gaping net. Madagascar were spirited in the dying minutes and had a goal disallowed for a foul on goalkeeper Katlego Moletsane, as Banyana held on to their first win points in Group A.
The victory moved Banyana up to second place in the section, three points behind leaders Malawi after two games. Madagascar, however, were eliminated after losing their first two games.
