Sekhukhune United are reportedly in talks to sign Mamelodi Sundowns and
Bafana Bafana defender Nyiko Mobbie on a permanent basis.
Sources close to both clubs have revealed that negotiations are underway
for the 24-year-old to move to Babina Noko after spending two seasons on
loan at the club.
Mobbie’s contract with the Brazilians is set to expire in June 2024 and
Sekhukhune are keen to secure a deal before the player becomes a free
agent, allowing other teams the chance to pounce on him.
“They have trust in the player,” said a source. “This is his third season
on loan at the same team which means they don’t want to lose him. But now
they want him permanently and they have opened up the communication
process with Sundowns. I can’t say how far it has gone but they have a
good understanding and I think things will work out well for both sides.”
A second source added that Sundowns may prefer to get a signing fee for
Mobbie soon, instead of losing him for free.
“If they finalise the talks now then Sundowns will get something from the
deal. They won’t allow to lose him for free right now so the talks should
conclude as soon as December and before the player goes to the AFCON
finals in January,” said the source.
Mobbie joined Sundowns in 2019 from Free State Stars on a five-year
contract and has found it hard to break into the Sundowns right back role.
The Brazilians have Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena as their main options
there, while they can also use Grant Kekana when needed.
The defender has been a regular at Sekhukhune, playing in all nine league
games for the club so far.
PSLSA contacted Sundowns for comment but no response was received while
this story was prepared.
