Sundowns Set to Release South American Player at Last?

Mamelodi Sundowns could be set to part ways with one of their most
expensive players, Erwin Saavedra, according to Siya sources. The Bolivian
midfielder is currently in his home country undergoing rehabilitation, and
the club is looking to release him before the end of his contract in June
2024.

Sources indicate that although the club has a two-year option on the
player, they will probably not exercise it, instead opting to terminate
his contract. “It has been tough for the player. He hasn’t really
recovered from his injury and since May he hasn’t played football and the
club has been paying his salary,” said the Siya source.

The club is currently in talks with Saavedra and his representatives to
reach an agreement of his release. “The Sporting Director is the one in
charge of player movements at the moment and when they reach an agreement
with the player on the way forward it’s when we will know all the
logistics,” said the second source. “But they are working on parting ways
amicably before his contract expires in June next year.”

Mamelodi Sundowns were contacted for comment but no response was received
while preparing this story.
