On Saturday, 25th November, Kaizer Chiefs were denied a second spot in
the DStv Premiership after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City at the
FNB Stadium.
City head coach Erik Tinkler revealed that he had noticed the frustration
on the faces of the Chiefs players before halftime. Khanyiso Mayo scored
the only goal of the game, his fourth of the season, to guide the Citizens
to a narrow victory.
Tinkler explained that his team had done well to contain the Chiefs, who
rely on speed to break down defences.
“What was important in the first half was to contain them, they are a
team that is built on speed, so very important today that we didn’t give
them those spaces in behind and I thought we did that very well in the
first-half, playing with really a back-five,” Tinkler said.
He went on to explain that his triple substitution of Darwin Gonzalez,
Jaedin Rhodes and Taahir Goedeman was inspired by the idea of capitalizing
on spaces in the Chiefs defence, as he realized they were getting
frustrated.
“I could already see the frustration in Chiefs faces just before
half-time, they saw that it was difficult to break us down, we once or
twice could have really caught them on a counter but we lacked the legs to
get there,” Tinker said.
The win took Cape Town City up to fourth place in the DStv Premiership
standings, while Kaizer Chiefs remain in second.
