The South African national team coaching staff are set to meet to discuss
the selection of players for upcoming fixtures, with Mamelodi Sundowns’
Cassius Mailula a top priority. Insiders have revealed that the in-form
attacker is being prioritized for the senior team.
Bafana Bafana, led by Hugo Broos, are set to take on Liberia in two
matches for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, while the national
under-23s will have a camp of their own for friendly matches to prepare
for the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The under-23s are set to
play against Congo over two legs in the third and final round of
qualifiers later this month.
Both Broos and under-23 mentor David Notoane are understood to be keen on
having Mailula in their squads for the crucial matches this month, and the
Sundowns striker looks set to get his first senior team call-up. Broos has
shown that he is not afraid to give young players who show potential a
chance to prove themselves in the senior national team.
Mailula is having a dream first season in the top flight, with 12 goals
and four assists in all competitions. His experience in the CAF Champions
League puts him in a good position to handle the pressure of playing for
Bafana.
The coaches are set to meet next week, where a decision will be made on
which players will feature for Bafana and the under-23s.
