Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Gaston Sirino could remain at the club until
the expiry of his contract in June 2025, despite not playing a single
minute in an official game this season, the Siya crew understands.
The Uruguayan midfielder had reportedly fallen out of favour with the
technical team and had been linked with the likes of Orlando Pirates and
Kaizer Chiefs, but the two parties are now trying to find a solution.
Siya sources at the club have indicated that finances could be the main
obstacle to the negotiations, as Sirino is one of the highest paid players
in the PSL.
“Sirino’s situation is very delicate and very tricky right now. The
problem is that he is not in the technical team’s plans going forward but
at the same time for him to move, a lot of money has to be involved,” said
the Siya source.
“The best solution is that he should see off his contract because
terminating his contract now will be expensive for the club as well. At
the moment there is no club that has come forward officially with an offer
or something like that and that’s the other problem.”
A different Siya source also stated that the cost of releasing Sirino is
what is delaying his potential move away from the club.
“At the moment both parties agree that it seems very slim that he can play
again though he is still part of the team. The problem for them to reach
an agreement amicably is due to the costs that could be involved if the
club buy him out,” said the other Siya source.
“Mind you he still has about two years remaining on his contract and to
settle that for a player on his salary won’t come cheap. That’s why the
best plan from the club’s possible point of view is to see him finish off
his contract.
The 32-year-old last played for Sundowns on May 20 in the 2-2 draw against
Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League second leg semi-final which
saw the Brazilians crash out of Africa.
When contacted for comment, Sundowns did not respond while this story was
prepared.
